childhood fantasy challenge
by liz bennett

When I was child, my parents would never let me eat peanut butter and jam in the same sandwich. My mother would say, "When I was a child, we weren't allowed peanut butter and butter in the same sandwich, so you're certainly not allowed peanut butter and jam. How ridiculous to want two fillings at once!" And that was that.

So I still have never tried the PBJ. And this got me thinking: what about all the things other people wished they could do as children, but never had the chance? How would be it to go back and try them now?

So here's your challenge:

- Think of something you fantasised about doing as a child, but have never done.

- Have a go at it. Not if it was something like having a pet baby tiger, please. But licking out the cake mixture, using fake ID and making mud pies are all fine by us.

- Tell us about it - the text can be as short as you like, as long as you had a go.

We'll feature some of the stories in issue 7 and the rest will be serialised on the blog. If you'd like yours to be considered for issue 7, please email it to me ([email protected]) by Friday 15th.

issue six is on the way!

Issue six is off at the printers and we're very excited.

This issue, we shrugged off our fears of burnt sugar and ruined saucepans and had a go at making sweets. We sewed our own shoes out of wool.

We also tested the luckiness of horseshoes and risked our luck with broken mirrors and umbrellas indoors, and met up for a game of poker to decide the matter:

Copies of issue six will reach subscribers around the 27th, and be in shops the following week.

the story behind issue five's cover

Most photographs have a story behind them, and the cover photo of oh comely issue five is no different.

The photographer was India Hobson and stylist Leila Hartley, and the model was Taii Gordon from Premier. The team used the beautiful photographic studios at The Clic La Mode as a location. "It was an inspiring place rather than a generic room with a white backdrop", says India. To set the mood she gave Leila, "a selection of Joyce Tenneson's photographs and a few words to work from: light, ethereal and contented."

Leila has another perspective on the day, and one that reminds me just how snowy it was last winter. "We were shooting at the height of winter when it started snowing and in about five seconds, we were immersed in a total white out. The nearby Thames Barrier totally disappeared. After the snow came the most beautiful sunlight streaming through the windows. It really made the shoot."

Looking at the final photos, you'd never think it was winter. But I guess that's half the beauty of great pictures. They are windows onto the world, just not as we see it.

Hair and make-up was by Nina Fay Robinson, and the styling was assisted by Mimi Howard.

Every issue of oh comely, we make a playlist of the songs we listened to whilst putting the magazine together. With Issue 5 just out, you can catch all the tunes we sang along to and loved this time around. It's over on Spotify now. Happy listening!
